In an unexpected result at the 2024 US Open, the second-seeded doubles team of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden suffered a surprising straight-set defeat to the 16th-seeded Argentine duo, Máximo González and Andrés Molteni. The Argentine pair won the third-round match 6-1, 7-5.
González and Molteni dominated the opening set, taking it 6-1 with ease. Although Bopanna and Ebden rallied in the second set, they couldn’t break through, eventually losing 7-5. The result marks an early exit for the Indian-Australian duo, who came into the tournament as one of the favorites after a successful season.
The previous meeting between these two pairs was in the Australian Open quarter-final this year, a tournament that helped Bopanna/Ebden ascend to the World No.1 rankings. Besides, Bopanna and Ebden had also reached the final at the US Open last year, losing in a tight final match to Ram/Salisbury.
