“This is my biggest win” – Niki Poonacha upon beating Sumit Nagal

In a stunning upset at the Maha Open Challenger, Niki Poonacha toppled India’s top-ranked player, Sumit Nagal, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. This remarkable victory propelled Poonacha into the quarterfinals, sending shockwaves through the Indian tennis circuit. Let’s hear directly from Poonacha as he reflects on his impressive win and shares his thoughts on the upcoming challenges:

Sumit (Nagal) is India’s number one. And he just cracked Top 100. Going back to the first game, I served three double faults. Wasn’t a great start. I was a bit nervous. I grew into it and slowly found my game. But I think this surface and conditions suit me very well. It definitely played a big role today.

That’s the nature of the game. Outside we are friends. But once we go inside the court, we have to win. Someone has to win. Outside the circuit, we are still friends. But once we get on the court, we have to go “no mercy” mode I would say.

Definitely. Beating Sumit, this is the biggest win for me. I am pretty happy. I played a really good game. I showed what I can really do on court. That’s self-confidence for me. And going to the next tournament, it will definitely boost my morale and confidence.
