In India, where an “education first” culture is prevalent, it is tricky for kids and parents to find the ideal balance between sports and studies. Parents, especially, often find themselves in a tight spot, where they feel that their child’s education is being compromised. The newly launched Sports School in Bangalore precisely aims to eradicate that concern out of the parents’ minds.

The Sports School has 7 ITF standard floodlit hard courts, with a centre court that can house 200 people. With a state-of-the-art gym, a proper hostel system, canteen, etc in place, it aims to provide student athletes the perfect environment to grow and succeed, both in sports and academics.

On what sets The Sports School apart –

The Sports School is the first of its kind to provide a platform to athletes who want to be coached by the best in their fields, with outstanding infrastructure and a robust education system. The Jain Group Of Institutions(JGI) prioritises sport, which is the main difference here

On what level of kids/athletes can look at joining –

We cater to all levels of kids – whether it’s starting from progressive tennis to the professional level. We start them off with an assessment, which tells you the aspects you need to work on, be it fitness, stretching, nutrition, etc

On the kind of facilities on offer –

I personally have gone through a journey where I had to travel 4-5 kms for tennis, and then another 5-6 kms to work out in the gym, which wasn’t really ideal. But here, we have seven floodlit tennis courts that are available 24*7. The good part about that is that you can practise whenever you want. We have an in-house gym, cafeteria with nutritionists to guide you on your diet. At the end of the day, if a player focuses just on their tennis, fitness and nutrition, it makes a big difference, as they have everything under one roof

Chat with UV Sankar, Head of The Sports School –

Generally in this country we have problems where the sportsmen are struggling with academics.  The Sports School brings in a system where academics is taken care of, but sports would be the priority. For example, the tennis kids who are under the RBTA system and who are part of the Sports School system, suppose there are tournaments 3 weeks in a month, so academics will definitely take a backseat. We ensure that once they come back we cover up their academics. So the children are not under the pressure of ‘what happens to my classes?’, ‘what happens to my studies?’ They have a 100% free mindset to go and play.

It’s a great facility. Everything is taken care of. They have a hostel inside campus, which makes it very convenient. They provide food, the locker rooms are good where you can recover for the next session

I think the best part about this place is that gives you a sense of discipline that other academies lack. You eat on time, you sleep on time. I’ve never experienced this at any other academies in India. I really like the hostels here as well. They put a lot of focus on fitness as well, where I have improved a lot
